about

Shimmering Digital Transients was a single exploratory session recorded on July 12th, 2020, only a few months into the global pandemic, with the R-EW Audioholistics system still in a very embryonic state. During this time, extensive experiments were being done with routing anything and everything that produced a sound in the White Pillar Workshop into the system, simply for the act of observing the results. In this case, the Korg ER-1 digital drum synthesizer was chosen for a session, and heavily processing the machine's output within a granular drone setting manifested a wonderful shimmering wall (as Brian Evenson may have put it himself). I have long championed the ER-1 as my personal favorite drum machine, because it does not rely on a bank of samples, but rather, behaves more like an FM synthesizer with a few waveforms of pure sound that are shaped via frequency/amplitude/cross modulation, a high/lowpass filter, a digital delay that resembles the PT2399 and a powerful motion sequencing capability to automate nearly every function. It also includes two dedicated external inputs that can facilitate feedback loops as well as realtime sampling from outer sources, and so it follows that this machine performs quite well alongside a modular system that is designed to process and transfigure sound from any provenance. Eventually, more ER-1/R-EW sessions will likely come to pass, but for now, this singular drone session stands as a testament to the strength of the ER-1 and the otherworldly versatility of the R-EW system, even at that early point in its development.
