about

ROMAN FOUNTAINS is one of two (so far) pieces generated by way of selectively sampling Impressionist piano music, processing it with FFT (fast fourier transforms: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_Fourier_transform ) and then routing the resultant audio into the R-EW Audioholistics modular system. These experiments are always interesting, if for no other purpose besides learning new things about my existing generative systems and processors, things that may not have been quite so evident if I were not inputting music that was pre-recorded as opposed to being sporadically performed or created. ROMAN FOUNTAINS follows a similar methodology as WHITE NOTHING, but as you can plainly hear, the differences between the two are massive, as not only the original sampled music is different, but the instruments have changed as well, and yet both ROMAN FOUNTAINS and WHITE NOTHING manage to feel cohesive in some ways also, inhabiting domains of tonal music while almost completely avoiding recognizable melodic movements or other compositional conventions. Sonically, ROMAN FOUNTAINS brings to my mind what it may sound like if Brian Eno were to have written a score for a game in Cyan's Myst video game series, particularly Riven, which remains a big influence on much of my work. This is to say, it glides through passages of chordal unison that drift apart and back together again, while the voices of these movements themselves shift between textures that resemble bassoon, metal horns, FM synthesizers and even electric guitar. For being so constantly shifting and in-motion, ROMAN FOUNTAINS is a very placid listening environment that I hope you enjoy bathing in as much as I continue to.
